Jolly Phonics

Jolly Phonics is widely recognized as the most effective and fun way to improve children’s literacy level. The five key skills in Jolly phonics to teach children to read and write are:

1. Learning the letter sounds

Teach children the 42 main letter sounds in a specific order instead of alphabetically, which allows children to begin building words as early as possible.

2. Learning letter formations

Teach children how to form and write letters by using different multi-sensory methods.

3. Blending

Teach children how to blend the sounds together so that they can learn how to read and write new words.

4. Identifying the sounds in words (Segmenting)

Teach children to identify the phonic components of a word so that they can assemble and break down the sounds within word, which improves children’s spelling.

5. Tricky Words

Tricky words in English have irregular spellings, such as me and my, or cannot sounded out easily, such as said, was and one. We can only memorize the irregular part of the word. Teaching children to learn common tricky words can improve their reading fluency.
